Mary, Mary quite contrary.......

I love to garden.....in fact, I've had a garden pretty much ever since I moved out of my mom's house. When I lived in rental houses and apartments, my garden was 5 gallon buckets lined up with tomatoes and snap peas growing out of them. But, when Brian moved in, he (being my hero and all) built me my first REAL garden. I love it! I've grown several different things in it, but this year, we're pretty much sticking to what we know. Tomatoes (of the pear variety), cucumber, strawberries, spinich and chives. We also planted carrots, but they didn't seem to work for us this year. Maybe we'll try them again next year.

We've also got some pretty beautiful flowers this year as well. It's so fun to watch things grow and become more beautiful as the year progresses!

Welfare Brat by Mary Childers

I just finished reading this book. It was pretty good. It told the story of the author's upbringing as a child in very poor family. She was raised by her single mother in the Bronx with her 6 siblings. It was interesting to read about what this family had to do in the face of poverty and what the author had to do as a child who was almost as helpless as she was poor. It also talks about her mother's bad decisions that affect her children negatively. It was heart wrenching and heart warming at the same time. A pretty good read to end this graveyard rotation!

Daddy Daughter Day

Today as I slept (I worked last night and again tonight!) Brian and Tayler shared what we in our family call Daddy Daughter Day. (There are also Mommy Daughter Days--I'll post one of those later!)
These days occur when either parent has a day alone with Tayler and we decide to do a few special things just to celebrate how much we love our little sweetie.

Today, Brian and Tayler went to lunch at Applebees, bought a new little barbie, a new shirt, AND went to get Tayler's hair trimmed.
A day of pure heaven for a 4 year old! Brian took her to a place called "Monkey Doos" to get her haircut. It's a salon that caters to children. We've had her hair trimmed here a few times and she loves it! Not only does she get to sit in a cool car instead of a
barbers chair, she also gets to watch Disney movies and they style her hair afterward and of all things, put sparkle spray in it! She just loves going there, and always leaves looking and feeling like a million bucks! Unfortunately, Dad forgot the camera at the actual appointment, BUT I took a few shots when they got home.

Bring on the RSVP's!

What are these you ask? Why, these are the first two RSVP cards for our wedding! They came in the mail today! Oh my gosh.......this makes it so real!!!

I <3 Summer-time clothes!

I'm usually rather hesitant about shopping online becuase I feel that I need to try everything on before commiting to a purchase, but tonight I decided to take the plunge! My friend Kelly has had some pretty good luck shopping on at http://www.oldnavy.com/ for herself and for her kids so I decided to give it a try. I've been keeping an eye out for a summer dress that I can wear to my bridal shower that is coming up next month. When I saw this, I thought it would be just perfect! And only $20!

But, of course I couldn't stop there! They are having a huge sale on all of their clothing. So, I peeked around for something that my lil' tater tot would like and......this little summer dress came along and I could resist. She's going to be a little princess in it!

Although Tayler would be tickled pink to only wear dresses the rest of her life, I do sometimes have to buy her other stuff....like shorts, which she really avoids wearing at all cost. BUT, I figured that with a girly, cute little top, she'd be more excited about wearing her new shorts.....and that's when I found this.......

I am just tickled about all of my finds! I can't wait until they all come in the mail (only $5 shipping by the way!) And don't worry.....I didn't forget about Brian. Yesterday, I ordered him something online too. Not nearly as sweet and fun to buy as the stuff for Tayler and I, but he'll look just as cute in it!!! He'll look great in it at the Mariners vs. Toronto game we're going to next weekend. Hopefully it will arrive in time!
So, after all of the anxiety I've always felt about online clothes shopping, I feel pretty good about these purchases. I only paid a teeny amount of money to have the items shipped, AND if I don't like something, it can be returned to the store.

You found that where?????

My sweet friend Kelly (wedding photos previously posted) called me tonight from the airport in Maui. Her and her new hubby were waiting to board their flight home from their honeymoon, but she had some time to kill and decided to give me a ring. So, we were chatting about her trip and she was telling me about all of the fun things they'd done all week(Brian and I are going there and staying in the same hotel in September for our honeymoon). Then she remembered the story to beat all stories......evidently she'd decided to wade out into the beautiful blue ocean with her husband a few days earlier. Harmless, right? Not this day. A huge wave came out of no where and knocked her (as she put it) "ass over tea kettle" up onto the shore. She told me that her bikini bottoms had about 1/2 of the sand from the Pacific Ocean in them once she got her wits about her. She told her husband that the sand was making her outfit quite uncomfortable, to the point she even considered taking them off in the water and shaking them out....but decided against it when she pictured another wave coming and knocking her again onto the shore, but this time, sans bottoms. So, the decided to make the 30 minute drive back to their hotel. Once back, she couldn't get into the shower soon enough....she got out of her bottoms, rinsed them, and began cleaning herself of all of that sand when she heard "clink..clink.clink". She looked down and saw a piece of coral that had evidently been lodged in her rear. No wonder she'd been uncomfortable! That thing had bedded itself where the sun don't shine!!! She told me that although she is fully aware that the Hawaiian Visitors Bureau would most certainly frown upon it, she's keeping the piece of coral. She feels as though she's earned it!! Ahh, I love that girl!!!

My sweet baby.....

So, as I mentioned in my previous post, I'm working my looooooooooong weekend. On these weekends, Tayler goes to her mom's house on Friday morning, then my mom babysits her on Saturday while her mom works, then we pick her back up on Monday morning. Well, there's no doubt that our house is quieter on these weekends, it also lacks some sunshine and a lot of sweetness.

I called my mom when I woke up for work to ask her how things with Tayler went. She told me all about their day swimming at the park, the friends Tayler made, and all of the adorable little quips that came out of my baby girls mouth. She never ceases to amaze me and crack me up. I'm missing her today and just can't wait until Monday when her and I can share one of our "mommy & daughter days".

Graveyard

So, it's night uno of my long weekend working graveyard. Needless to say, this being my 5th week of graveyard, I'm feeling it in more ways than one (see attached self portrait). First of all, I seriously think it might be impossible for me to get "enough" sleep. I could probably sleep for 25 hours straight if allowed. Last night, I went to bed around midnight. I got up this morning at 6:30am to meet with my trainer. I came home, did a few things around the house, saw my sweetie off to work, then decided to lay down for a nap around 9am. I set my alarm for 4:30, just in case. When my alarm went off, I proceeded to press snooze until 5:30pm. Then, I finally FORCED myself out of bed and into the shower. It's sad really.
Secondly, and my sweetheart of a boyfriend can vouch for this...I can be a lil' teeny-weeny bit tough to get along with. Let's just say, we've had one or two little disagreements with me at the end in tears, wondering why on earth everything and everyone is against me? I'm usually fine after a little calming down, but seriously. I'm starting to feel very sorry for the people I live with.
So, the fact that after this weekend, I only have one more week until I'm on dayshift? Let's just say, as far as our house is concerned....it's a very, very good thing.

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult

I just finished reading "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult. It was about a school shooting in New Hampshire. This is the third book by Jodi Picoult that I've read. "My Sister's Keeper" was BY FAR my very favorite. This most recent read, would probably fall into second place, and "The Pact", which I read about a year ago, would probably come in third. Jodi Picoult is a really talented author, and she's written many, many books. People at my work pass them around all of the time (I got this one from my boss). Most people enjoy her writing. My only problem is that I read "My Sister's Keeper" first, which is the absolute best book I've ever read. So every time I read something else of hers, I'm just a teeny bit disappointed! I don't think she'll ever top that book!
If you're looking for a good, easy read....Jodi Picioult is a good author to check out!

Rock hard bod, here I come!

I've been working out with a trainer for about 2 weeks now. I'm feeling pretty good. Hopefully getting stronger....and slimmer.

I decided to get with a trainer to get wedding/Maui ready. She's a friend of mine, Stefanie, and she is freaking awesome! I just love her. She totally motivates me, and keeps me on track. She's having me write down everything I eat, which in itself makes me eat healthier! Plus, she's got me working out 3 days a week, HARD!

On the days that she and I don't work out together, I'll be doing cardio on my own. I mostly walk....but she's got me started on intervals. This is where I run for 1 minute, then walk for 2 minutes. I do this for 15 minutes, then I walk for another 45. She'd like me to add 5 minutes to my intervals, until I'm doing intervals for the entire hour of cardio!!! Crazy!

Stefanie has gotten me really excited about my fitness and nutrition goals. She's teaching me so much, and helping me make sure that I'm doing all exercises correctly. I can't wait until my fitness levels are back where they should be, and I'm feeling and looking great!

Happy Father's Day

Today, we began our father's day with a delicious home-made breakfast of french toast, bacon, rasberries, and orange juice. We sat outside on our new patio that Brian has been building. It was so nice out! We also presented Brian with a few cards to let him know just how much we appriciate him!

This evening, Brian's mom took us to dinner at Tony Romas. We had a really good dinner, then after ward, we stopped by my mom's house so that Brian could get his card from her. Inside was a Starbucks gift card.....something we both can enjoy! =) After that, we went over to Brian's mom's house for cake. There she had a card for him, and inside of it was a Home Depot gift card. He really scored this year!!!

We are so thankful for Brian / Dad in our lives. He is such a hard working, handsome, smart, brave, sweet, loving, generous, and awesome part of our lives. Happy Father's Day to the #1 guy in both Tayler and my life!

Kelly & Bobby's Wedding

Tonight was my good friend Kelly's wedding at the Elegance Gardens in Kennewick. She married her boyfriend of two years, Bobby Miller (who Brian and I both think is an awesome guy!) It was so beautiful. They have so many gorgeous plants growing out there, and such beautiful landscaping. It didn't hurt either that the bride looked breath taking and the groom was very handsome as well.

You could see Kelly's lip trembling as she walked down the isle toward Bobby and it instantly put a lump in my throat! Then to hear Kelly's sister Lauren read her a beautiful poem during the ceremony.....I should have had some tissue!

Tayler had a great time running around with Kelly's daughter Maddy, and Bobby's niece. They danced their hearts out! Tayler tried to be such a good girl the whole time....she did struggle a bit though...asking multiple times during the ceremony "Am I being quiet?", getting quite offended that she wasn't being included in the all of the family photos being taken, telling another guest (who happens to be a friend of mine from work) "my dress is prettier than yours", and last but not least, sneaking up during the toast with Maddy to steal cupcakes before everyone else. But, all and all it was a really enjoyable time. It made me very excited for our big day!

Bubbles and Puppies!

One of Tayler's favorite things to do these days is to blow bubbles in our back yard, and let our crazy dogs chase them around. It's so funny to watch our little weiner dogs leap into the air trying to pop all of the bubbles. Today Tayler headed out with her new "bubble wand" (our $1 purchase from our local dollar store!) and proceeded to entertain our dogs. I couldn't help but laugh as I watched Macie run around like a crazed hound dog, and Cooper slowly approaching bubbles with his little nose, only to have Macie fly up to him and pop it before he could even touch it! Oh, the glorious entertainment summer brings!

100 things about me

1. I am the oldest child in my family.

2. I love chocolate and peanut butter together in any form. I think it's one of the greatest combos ever created.

3. I'm fascinated with life in New York City. I read blogs of people who live there, and dream of living there one day myself.

4. I never could see myself having children until I met my future husbands daughter. Now I can't freaking wait.

5. My sister is my best friend in the world.

6. I've had plastic surgery twice.

7. When I was in grade school, up until the 4th grade, I was teased about my ears. (see #6) Although this was an unpleasant time in my life, I think it taught me compassion for things people can't help I don't know that I would have learned had this not happened in my life.

8. I miss my dad.

9. My grandparents are some of the most upstanding, accepting and generous people I know.

10. I love my future mother and sister in laws and feel that I've lucked out in these departments.

12. I think my mother is one of the most generous and caring people I've ever known and will ever know.

13. I enjoy doing yard work and wish I had more money to do even cooler things in my yard.

14. When I was a kid I wanted to be a nurse. I think it's because my sister and I would rub my dads feet and put lotion on them for him and he used to tell us "you girls take such good care of me, you should be nurses."

15. I have a fairly large crush on Bobby Flay. Much to the dismay of my soon to be hubby.

16. I can't stand when men have excessively long or excessively short finger nails.

17. I get choked up every single time I hear the "Star Spangled Banner."

18. I played the flute and the clarinet in junior high.

19. I drink Starbucks sometimes even when I don't feel like it. It's almost like a habit, and an addiction. Expensive!

21. I'm extremely flakey when it comes to returning phone calls.

22. I hate running but really wish I didn't.

27. I absolutely love clean sheets.

28. I see a lot of my father in myself. Things I love, and things I despise.

38. I think Pomegranate martinis are heaven in a glass.

39. I eat out too much, but love nothing more then going out with my sweetie.

40. When I was in kindergarten, my best friend was also my neighbor. Her name was Sarah Ann Slater, and I still think about her sometimes and wonder where she is.

41. I have a mild......interest.....or fascination with little people. (L.P.'s) People think I'm making fun, but honestly I just have a weird curiosity in them.

45. Whenever I go out of town and we rent a hotel room, I feel like a "real adult". All the mortgage payments I make, and work I go to, nope. Doesn't do it. It's getting the keys to my OWN hotel room that really puts it in stone for me.

46. I underestimate myself far more than I should.

47. I'm a pretty good speller.

And this is the reason my mom, my sister and I have such a wonderful bond. And it's likely the reason I'll end up with acne scars like craters on my face.

My sister didn't want the "black" baby, until my mom told her it was "Hawaiian". Then it became her favorite doll for years to come, and every baby she got from then on, she wanted to be "Hawaiian".

78. I didn't have a name until 5 days after I was born. I was almost known as Vanna or Shandy.

79. My dad cried when I was born. I don't think my mom never saw him cry again. I've seen him cry twice since.

91. My junior year in high school, during one of my first days in my math class...my teacher mistakenly called me "Tarika", when telling me to stop talking to my friend (can you imagine? me?). The name stuck for the rest of my high school career. People even wrote it in my year book.

92. I'd pay an enormous sum of money to go back in time and be able to hold my sister as a toddler. She was so cute, it just kills me.

I'm finally blogging!!!!

Soooo, I've been wanting to blog for sometime now, but felt like I should wait until Brian and I were married. (I have no clue why?!) Anyway, I've decide that now is as good a time as any to begin blogging my heart out!

Well, first things first. I'm currently engaged to the absolute love of my life, Brian. We are getting married on September 8, 2007. I can hardly wait! Wedding planning has proven to be a daunting yet exciting task, and I have to say, I've enjoyed (almost) all of it!

Brian's daughter Tayler, who lives with us, is the absolute joy of our lives! She's our little swimming, gymnast, spelling, address remembering princess. We are so very proud of her and can't wait to share our adventures with her.

Tayler makes me laugh almost every day. For example, we decided to rent some movies the other day. I told Tayler that she could pick two out, and that we'd watch them sometime over the next week. She decided to go with a "Barbie Fairytopia" movie, and one titled "Barbie Diaries". So, Barbie Diaries was the first to go into the DVD player, and she watched the whole thing, eyes glued to the television while I got some things done around the house. After it was over, I needed to run a few errands so we loaded up in the car. As I was driving I heard Tayler singing in the back seat...nothing unusual there....and the tune I heard sounded similar to something I'd heard on the movie she'd just watched. The only problem was, when I actually listened to the words she was saying, I heard my little sweetheart repeating the chorus "Barbie Diarrhea". It cracked me up! My life would be a very boring place without this four year old!
